Turkey
For English books in Turkey, Istanbul has it all. Not only a wonderful selection of bookshops that stock English language titles (see below) but also one of the worlds great centres of book-love, the Sahaflar Carsisi – the Book Bazaar, a small animated square on the edge of the great covered bazaar which leads directly into Beyazit Meydani - the large irregular piazza set around the Beyazit mosque and the entrance to the University. Fringed with cafes and old colleges (one of which has been turned into a museum of calligraphy) the corner of Beyazit Meydani nearest the Sahaflar Carsisi is filled with dealers in old coins, medals and prayer beads on Sunday morning. In addition to the second hand dealers in the Book bazaar, book lovers might want to check out two shops in the streets of old Pera: Ottomania, Sofyali Sokak 30-32, off Istiklal Caddesi near Tunel, T 212-243 2157 and Turkuaz, Emir Nevruz Sokak, no 12, Galatasaray, T 212-245-4588.
- English bookshop: Divanyolu Caddesi number 11, Sultanahmet, T 212-516 3366
The English bookshop, near Divan Yolu’s reknowned Pudding Shop, is actually signposted as the Galerie Kayseri. It now has two branches, almost opposite each other at no 58 and no 11 Divanyolu Caddesi Sultanahmet.
Most easily accessible of all the Istanbul bookshops for a first time visitor, just a short stroll away from the Ayai Sophia and Blue Mosque on the central Divan Yolu thoroughfare which leads to the covered bazaar. Well chosen, selective stock with an owner passionate about Irfan Orga’s Portrait of a Turkish Family.

Fergiani stock reprints of Haynes’s invaluable guide to the Antiquities of Tripolitania, Goodchild’s very useful pamphlet on Cyrene and Apollonia and Colonel Gaddafi’s Green Book.
